James Morley

JMF was established in 2001 and is based in Hartland, North Devon. Our furniture is CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE that sits easily alongside antiques as well as in a more modern setting. it is UNIQUE FURNITURE that is sympathetically designed and beautifully made using fabulous timber and it is BESPOKE, designed and made exclusively for you.

Recent commissions have included an exquisite bench for The Royal Yacht Squadron and a Chinese screen and chest in black lacquer and gold leaf; but the most exciting news is that James has just received a Guild Mark from The Worshipful Company of Furniture makers for his Archway Table. Only 10 of these are awarded every year and they are deemed to be the equivalent of the 'Oscars' for cabinetry.

Examples of James' work can be seen at The Wood Glorious Wood Gallery in Hartland, North Devon and of course on his website www.jamesmorleyfurniture.com.

The Serpentine Desk

This burr oak desk was made of a client who now works from home for two days a week and he was fed up with making do with an old work desk. The desk has multiple hidden compartments and the drawers are all subdivided to suit the clients own stationary etc etc.

James' Library Steps

These library steps are one of the few items that I have desgned various versions of as they are so popular. Each set has been in a different timber and is made to measure for that particular client. These steps are also due to star alongside Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig in The Golden Compass which is due out in November 2007.

The Big Easy

This client presented his own yew wood and asked for a big comfortable outrageous armchair. The combination of yew, purpleheart and aubergine leather works well and the client enjoyed complete involvement in the project from design, through to fittings and leather choice. He was so happy he even hired a van and drove down from Shropshire to pick it up.

The Quill

The Quill was designed for a client that loved the library steps but didn't have a need for them. She wanted a vanity mirror for the dressing table with a couple of drawers for bits and bobs. The Quill, made of walnut and venered in amboyna was my answer.

The Bibliotheque

The Bibliotheque, in black walnut and burr amboyna with lighting built in to the cornice now lives in the home of an avid book reader in Notting Hill. The base, with it's retractable doors, houses the only television in the house.

The Curvaceous Console Table

The Curvaceaus Console table, in maple and burr amboyna lives in an elegant Shropshire country house. However, we have had alot of interest from those with a town house, needing a table in the entrance hall for keys and all those other bits and bobs.

The Hartland Trio

The Hartland Trio was our first completed commission, when we moved into The Old Bakery in Hartland, North Devon. Made out of Swiss steamed pear wood with rosewood detailing, our client now revels in luxury every morning. She even has a secret compartment for all those little things one wants to keep private.

The Archway Chairs

The Archway chairs were made as a set of 18 side chairs and 2 carvers for a country house in south Devon. They are made of English walnut, traditionally upholstered and covered in the finest Italian aniline leather. The client wanted small simple comfortable chairs that were strong enough to withstand a lounging teenager.

Macassar Ebony Sidetable

This sidetable is one of a pair that now sit either side of a fireplace in a wonderful Regency house in Notting Hill. The are veneered in Macassar ebony and have a boxwood inlay line. The legs are solid macassar ebony and they lend the tables physical weight as well as strength.

Birdseye Bedside Tables

These Bedside tables of English cherry and birdseye maple with a rosewood inlay line hold a particular place for me as they were my first comission. The drawers are concealed when
