Philip Rose

I progressed to making fine furniture nearly twenty years ago after serving my time as a carpenter and joiner; I have been working with wood for well over thirty years. During this time I have amassed a great deal of experience and grown to love wood as a material. The physical challenges, disciplines and problem solving of construction work and joinery have proved invaluable in meeting the quite different challenges of making fine furniture.

I make contemporary or traditional, fitted or free standing bespoke furniture to suit your home or office. I have considerable experience with fitted pieces.

It is a great source of pride to me that many of my clients are regulars who return to me year after year; in fact many have become firm friends.

Arts and Crafts Wardrobe

This is possibly one of my best peices. An Arts and Crafts style in quarter-sawn English oak with Brown Oak detailing and Burr oak veneered drawers inside.

Walnut and Sycamore sideboard

This visually stunning piece is very complicated and was a real challenge to make. The leg frames are in American Black Walnut;the cabinet is Black Walnut to the outside with English Sycamore inside, Black Walnut Burr veneers to the doors and a Black Slate top. The cabinet floats within the leg frames and has curved sides which neccessitated me designing and hand making the brass hinges.

Cherry dining table

A dining table in American Cherry with laminated legs. The two halves seperate and by adding one or two extra leaves twelve people can be comfortably accommodated. This table has been in daily family use since 1992 so has certainly stood the test of time!

Large oak dining table

This is a substantial dining table in Oak. The generous overhang of the top allows for all the chairs to be pushed right in underneath.

fitted cabinet in Oak

This Oak cabinet and shelving unit fits under the stairs. The slatted section on the far left houses hi-fi speakers.

Table and chairs in Oak

A triangular kitchen table designed to fit in front of a window giving both sitters a view either way down the garden. On delivery my clients immediately commented on how comfortable the chairs were!

Wall unit in Oak and Burr Oak

This large wall unit is made in Oak with Brown Oak detailing and Burr Oak veneers on the drawer fronts. The inner cabinets are suspended within the outer units on Brass spacers. The lower drawers spring open at a touch obviating the need for handles which would break up the clean lines. I am now engaged on two more matching pieces.

Chapel door

This large door on a converted chapel is in Iroko. It was a physical challenge to make and hang as it is nine feet high and two and a half inches thick!

Oak chests.

A matching pair of these Oak chests were made, one of which houses a television which rises up at the touch of s switch! The panels were shot blasted to give a weathered appearance, echoing the old beams of the surroundings and contrasting the fine finish of the rest of the chests.

Merton furniture.

I was recently entrusted to make a complete set of furniture for a private chapel at Merton College, Oxford University. The suite comprises an Altar Table, Presidential chair, Legilium and Candlesticks. The commission came via a Westminster firm of church furnishers who provided the designs. Since the a processional crucifix has been added.

Excerpts

Just two examples of excerpts from the many letters of appreciation I have received from grateful clients. Visit my website for more!

Oak chairs

This family of oak chairs was made to go with the large Oak table shown above. The unusual design was carefully developed to give a surprisingly comfortable result but was quite a challenge to make!
